Who likes compromise? (It’s okay to admit you probably don’t!)
When it comes to your windows, it can be difficult to find the perfect all-rounder, and sometimes no single window furnishing will fit all your criteria.
That’s where layering comes in.
Layering blinds and curtains is one of the most underrated ways to ensure you get both functionality and style, without having to compromise.
It can allow you to blend both subtle light diffusion with privacy and evening solitude. It also enables you to create extra depth and character in a room, especially those in which you spend more time.
However, layering blinds and curtains well is a balancing act, so it’s worth taking the time to make sure it feels right!
Do I Need to Layer My Blinds and Curtains?
Knowing whether layering is the best solution for you depends on the type of room you’re dealing with. Layering can work wonderfully in bedrooms, living rooms, or larger spaces (especially those where you want to make a statement to your guests), but we typically advise avoiding layering for smaller rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, where damp or visual clutter can become an issue.
Start With The Blind
Chances are, the blind will be the one you operate most frequently day-to-day. So finding a blind that fits your daily needs is essential to getting that layering combo right.
Consider what you need most from your blind:
- Light control and privacy — a venetian blind offers subtle light diffusion and privacy whilst keeping the room feeling spacious
- Soft, yet ornate — a roman blind will bring a beautiful blend of opulence and homely warmth
- Modern and minimalist — a roller blind delivers a clean, contemporary look, to give your curtains centre-stage
- Tilt-and-turn windows — Perfect Fit blinds sit neatly in the window frame, completely out of the way
A Blind Just For Decoration…
Not all blinds have to be functional.
If your doesn’t require double-layering for functionality, but you wish to add a sense of grandeur, a purely decorative blind is a great option. A stationary faux-roman blind in a complementary colour or pattern to the curtain will give you that feeling of opulence without worrying about functionality.
Choosing a Complementing Curtain
Now it’s time for the showstopper…
Curtains bring warmth, insulation, visual softness, and when chosen well, can become the centrepiece of a room. But pairing blinds and curtains isn’t simply a matter of finding two things you love separately; it’s about finding two things that work together.
Here some of our favourite combinations:
- Sheers and non-sheers — a sheer blind gives you privacy and natural light filtering during the day, while a thicker curtain will insulate your home and block out light for a peaceful night’s rest.
- Mixing textures — different materials can add visual depth without relying on pattern. For example, a wood venetian paired with velvet curtains will give off that balance of luxury and homeliness.
- Bold curtains, understated blinds — while we love going big and bold, the last thing you want is your blinds and curtains competing for attention. Since your blinds will be hidden once the curtains are drawn, we recommend keeping the blind simple and letting the curtain make the statement.

Finding Your Perfect Combination
When layering is done thoughtfully, it elevates a room in a way that’s difficult to achieve by any other means. It’s the difference between a window treatment that merely functions and one that genuinely transforms a space.
