Roman Blinds are one of the most timeless and sophisticated window furnishings out there (and if you have one, chances are you already know that!)
But, the soft fabric of roman blinds means they require a bit more delicate upkeep.
This guide will detail how to make your roman blinds last longer, including:
- Most durable roman blind fabrics
- How to clean roman blinds
- How to remove roman blinds
- Can I have roman blinds in my kitchen or bathroom?
- Why quality matters
Most Durable Roman Blind Fabrics
When it comes to choosing fabrics, there are lots of things to consider; from style, light blocking, insulation — and also durability. If your top priority is ensuring they last many years to come, we’d recommend choosing fabrics such as heavyweight cottons, polyester blends or faux silk — fabrics which are designed to risk wear-and-tear without lots of maintenance.
How to Clean Roman Blinds
For General Upkeep
To keep them looking fresh, a cloth or soft brush is enough to keep light dust at bay.
For Dust and Dirt
To remove light dust, use the upholstery attachment (soft brush) on your vacuum cleaner and gently brush up and down the blind. This will keep your fabric looking fresher for longer.
For Stains
Stains on fabric can feel pesky to remove. For most fabrics, such as cotton, velvet or polyester, spot clean the area gently using a clean cloth and mild soapy water. Do not use bleach or stain removers, as these can cause discolouration.
For tougher stains, some roman blind fabrics may be suitable for dry cleaning, but we strongly advise you check beforehand. We’re more than happy to advise you if you are unsure.
How to Remove Roman Blinds
This bit can seem a little daunting at first, but thankfully roman blinds are very straightforward to remove and replace, once the track has been fitted.
Our Roman blinds typically attach to a strip of velcro on a batten, which holds the blind in place. To remove them, carefully peel the fabric away from the batten.
To replace them, stick the fabric back onto the batten, taking care to ensure the blind is placed straight (a wonky blind just isn’t quite the same!)
Can I Have Roman Blinds in my Bathroom or Kitchen?
The short answer is yes.
The longer answer is yes, but there are caveats. Soft fabrics absorb moisture, which can easily lead to mould and mildew build-up, which isn’t good for you or the blind! Fabrics like cotton and polyester are easy to clean and are more resistant to moisture than other, more delicate fabrics.
Also, consider the ventilation levels in your space. If your kitchen or bathroom is well-ventilated and the windows don’t receive too much condensation build-up, a roman blind will be more suitable than in a small, poorly ventilated space.
If your priority is a blind which requires only minimal upkeep, we’d recommend a water-resistant blind, such as a roller blind, or aluminium or faux-wood venetians instead, which are supplied by our partner, Karida Living.
Why Quality Matters
While the above advice will help increase the lifespan of your roman blinds, their longevity will always be limited if the blinds themselves are poor quality.
Choosing a quality blind means:
- High quality fabrics which are tightly woven, and won’t start to sag or fray over time.
- Stitched together by experienced makers who take pride in their craft
- Components, including brackets and chains, that can withstand wear-and-tear
With a team that brings decades of experience handcrafting curtains, roman blinds, pelmets and an array of soft furnishings, our priority is crafting pieces that don’t just cover your windows, but elevate your entire space.
